New police department may not avoid pay cuts after all
SALT LAKE COUNTY -- The Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office is changing into a stand-alone police department, but that doesn't mean it will escape the county's budget woes.

Next year the office will become the United Police Department, which may have helped officers avoid the 2.75 percent countywide pay cuts, as they won't be county employees anymore.

However, according to the Salt Lake Tribune, the county will consider cutting $375,000 from its contract with the newly-formed department to reflect the money it would have saved through pay cuts.
